Lamms Charged With Cruelty to Their Farm Animals, Sept. 6, 1919

From The Daily Times, Wilson, N.C., Sept. 6, 1919

Cruelty to Animals Case

This morning an interesting case was heard by Justice J.A. Clark. It seems that on last Thursday week a Mr. Taylor, hearing some cattle making sounds of distress, went over to the farm belonging to Mrs. Mary Lamm. He there found two cows tied to a short chain, both in a pitiable condition from the lack of food and water.

Upon his appearing he said the poor creatures, unable to stand, tried to come towards him on their knees. He rendered first aid to them and to two pigs he found on the place in the same condition, and then came to Wilson and reported the matter to Mrs. Geo. Stanton, representative of the Humane Society.

Mrs. Stanton called in Mr. F.D. Swindell, attorney for the society, and warrants were issued against Mary Lamm and her husband, Richard Lamm.

The preliminary hearing took place this morning with Mr. Swindell and Mr. H.H. Lee appearing for the prosecution and Mr. W.A. Finch for the woman defendant and Mr. E.J. Barnes for the man defendant.

After hearing the evidence Justice Clark bound both defendants over to the December term of the Superior Court under $100 bond each.
