Instead of $300 For Helping Patient to Escape, Attendant Given 60 Days On the Road, Feb. 12, 1921

By the Associated Press

Raleigh, N.C., Feb. 12—Instead of receiving an alleged bribe of $300 for aiding in the escape of Joe Johnson, an inmate at the state hospital for the insane who represented himself as a “millionaire” being detained unwillingly, Charles Baker, employed as an attendant at the asylum, drew a 60-day sentence when he was arraigned and pleaded guilty in municipal court today.

“He made me believe he was a millionaire and offered $300 if I got him out of the insane asylum,” Baker told the court.

“Did you get the money?” asked Judge Harris.

“No, they got me,” he replied.

“That being the case, I will give you8 60 days on the roads,” said the judge.

Johnson escaped last Sunday and was captured in a near-by town on Thursday.
