When young Albert Toler of Mashoes Creek, Dare County, landed a “loggerhead” mud turtle weighing 35 pounds the other day, it looked as if somebody was going to get hurt. Toler was celebrating his 18th birthday by doing a little hook and line fishing. He was somewhat surprised to get such a large turtle on his slender hook, and his surprise was still greater when he viewed a snapper of the unheard proportions of 35 pounds.
The mud turtle is a vicious animal, as much so as a mad dog, and this particular one took charge of young Toler’s boat, and chased overboard this seasoned fisherman, who has been known to hall in 840 fish an hour with a hook and line.
