Fayetteville, N.C., Jan. 20—a forest fire which started late Friday is sweeping over a 10-mile front in Harnett county, according to a message received here today from Capt. C.C. Christian, fire warden, who is directing a force of 50 men in fighting the flames. Captain Christian’s message said that the fire originated somewhere in the central part of the county, sweeping westward, and is now threatening border counties to the south and west. He estimated the damage thus far at $40,000.
Captain Christian’s telegram was filed at Manchester, in the extreme northwestern part of Cumberland county. The counties bordering Harnett county to the south and west are Hoke, Cumberland, Moore and Lee.
“Harnett county is on fire again,” said Captain Christian’s telegram. “Heroic all-night fight by Overhills Land company with 15 fighters saved 200 square miles of forests. High wind is driving fire through western Harnett county and threatening border counties to the south and west. Origin of fire somewhere in central Harnett county. Damage to forest and farms now about $40,000.”
A forest fire in Harnett county several months ago caused much damage.
