John Barnes Fractures Theodore McFalls' Skull, July 10, 1923

Negro Hit in Head With Pick Handle

Theodore McFalls, a negro at the state convict camp at the rock quarry, was struck in the head with a pick handle by John Barnes, another convict, Tuesday afternoon and his skull probably fractured. What caused the trouble is not known to camp officials, the negro who was hurt having told the camp superintendent, L.H. Champion, that there had been no trouble between the two men.

However, Barnes claims that they had been quarreling before the clash., McFalls received medical attention at the camp and was taken to Raleigh Thursday. His condition is serious, and he may die.

McFalls, a native of Rutherford county, was sentenced to serve five years from Burke county. Barnes was sentenced to serve 10 years from Edenton. McFalls had been a docile negro, a good worker and had never given any trouble, stated Mr. Champion.
