James Shepherd Breaks Hip, Wrists, In Fall from Third Story, March 22, 1925

Carolina Man Is Seriously Hurt in Fall. . . James Shepherd, Senior of Raleigh, Falls Three Stories When Rope Breaks at Dormitory

Chapel Hill, March 21—James Shepherd, a university senior, son of S. Brown Shepherd of Raleigh, is in the university infirmary suffering from a fracture of the left hip and both wrists, as the result of a fall from the third story of Steele dormitory, where he roomed. He will probably recover

. Shepherd was preparing for supper last night and had gone to a washroom on the third floor. On returning to his room he found the door locked and his room-make gone. Shepherd was in a dilemma and finally decided to try to gain entrance by lowering himself with a trunk rope from the window of the third floor directly over his. He was midway between the second and third stories when the rope broke and he fell to the ground.

Shepherd was removed to the infirmary unconscious where it was feared at first he would not recover. In addition to the fractures, he was suffering from shock. He retained consciousness this morning. Dr. E.A. Abernathy, university physician, who is treating him, said tonight that barring further complications he will recover.
