Are North Carolina Women Readers? April 22, 1925

Does North Carolina Read?

Winston-Salem Journal

Some light is shed by the University News Letter upon the amount of magazine reading done by women of North Carolina. This Authority has prepared a table showing the relation of all the States on this basis. The ranking is obtained by dividing the total circulation of women’s magazines by the population. California ranks first with 4.60 per inhabitants per women’s magazine, and Mississippi ranks last with 24.89 inhabitants per women’s magazines in circulation in the State. The average in North Carolina is 18.06 and only five States are lower in the scale.

The magazines on which the table is based are: Delineator, Designer and Woman’s Magazine, Good Housekeeping, Ladies’ Home Journal, McCall’s Magazine, Modern Priscilla, People’s Popular Monthly, Pictorial Review, Vogue and Woman’s Home Companion.

Magazines, books and newspapers are the chief source of education and information available to adults. A college education is of little value if the beneficiary of it does not carefully develop himself or herself by reading. On the other hand, any person who has not had the opportunity to go to college can make up in large part for this handicap by reading much of the right sort of reading material.
