It is said that a man can do anything he wants to do if he keeps trying. That may not be literally true, but he will do a whole lot better if he keeps trying, than he will if he doesn’t try.

According to court records since Hoke county was formed, we have less of crime than you find among a like number of population in the county. If we could persuade the people to leave off liquor, we would have little need of courts.

All you do pays you well, whether your efforts are physical or mental. Exercise of the brain or brawn is always rewarded. A man is not only the architect of his own fortune, but the builder of his physical strength and intellectuality. The process of building may be slow, but constant effort has been rewarded in every instance.

The inland summer resorts are increasing in numbers with each year. Every millpond and many ponds where they are no mills are now called lakes and people drift thither to dabble in water and dance on scaffolds. And they flock to places on the creek sand rivers to bathe, even those who have bathtubs and running water in their homes. It’s just a new craze, or overcropping symptom of moral depravity, perhaps.

Live above suspicion. It is easy. The woeful tales you hear about people have grounds for suspicion. It is hard to fabricate a lie without a starter.

Florida is leading all the states in progress, and they have neither income nor inheritance tax laws in that state, and this is given as the reason for the boom.

If Hoke county had a system of keeping up the public roads, we do believe we would soon have the best roads of any county in the State; but as it has been, and is now, it is too long between workings.

We did not like the creation of so many commissions by the last legislature, but a majority of the members thought they were necessary. These usually cost a great deal more than their services are worth to the State.
