Charlotte, April 22—A front-wheel drive car—the same vehicle that the late Jimmy Murphy expected would revolutionize automobile racing—will be entered the Charlotte Memorial Day races here on May 11.
The announcement is contained in a message to Osmond L. Barringer, general manager of the Charlotte Speedway, from Fred Wagner, the veteran starter. It is not announced, however, who will drive the car, although it is known that Tommy Milton is anxious to give it its baptism of speed.
The car has been tested out thoroughly on the speedway at Culver City, Calif., and is said to be a marvelous creation. It is a Miller special, and is equipped with a supercharger. It is certain to prove one of the intensely interesting features of the racing classic here May 11. It will probably become the “dark horse” of the big event.
The Speedway management now definitely announces that Earl Cooper, Tommy Milton, Benny Hill and Harry Hartz, four of the sensational drivers in the October races—and four of the world’s best—are entered in the second Charlotte classic. This quartet alone assures racing fans in this neck of the woods a performance that will be worth a journey of many miles to see. Added to these is Cliff Durant, one of the veterans of the game. Also, Pete DePaolo who gave everybody a thrill with his superb driving and uncanny bursts of speed last October, will again be among those present. From this it looks as though some real racing is going to be handed out to the fans.
