Fire Last night, thought to have been of incendiary origin, totally destroyed a large stable and feed barn on Mr. K.M. Biggs’ farm about 2 miles east of town on the Elizabeth road, and burned to death two horses and one mule belonging to Mr. A.M. Cox.
Besides the horses and mule, Mr. Cox lost all his farming implements, consisting of plows, disc harrows, mowing machine and harness and a large quantity of hay. An old Ford car, which had not been used in several months, and a two-horse wagon were also destroyed. Chickens in an enclosure at the south end of the barn were rescued, with the exception of one jumping into the fire instead of to freedom.
Loss amounting to approximately $1,500 was total for Mr. Cox, who stated last night that he had no insurance. Mr. Biggs has not been able to locate a policy covering his loss but is under the impression that his property, including five tons of guano and the buildings, was covered by insurance.
No one was at home when the flames were discovered. Mr. Cox had gone to Mr. B. Edwards’ filling station and store about a half-mile away to get some medicine for a sick neighbor, and his family had just left the house going in the direction of the store when the alarm was sounded by a passer-by.
