Clarence Bernhardt and Son Chase Chicken Thief, Dec. 18, 1925

Chicken Thief Drops Bag But Keeps Going. . . Rowan Man and His Son Chase Robber But He Escapes

Salisbury, Dec. 18—Having been pestered considerably by chicken thieves of late and having lost 50 chickens during the year, J. Clarence Bernhardt, a rural letter carrier connected with the Salisbury office, gave chase last night to a thief who had just emerged from his hen house. Mr. Bernhardt and his son used a car and when they overtook the visitor and ordered him to halt and he did not they opened fire on him. When Mr. Bernhardt’s gun fired, the fleeing man dropped a bag of chickens but never hesitated. While Mr. Bernhardt thinks he struck him, there is no definite evidence that he did. The chickens in the bag numbered eight.
