“Influenza Reaching Its Height in Burke County,” from the Hickory
Daily Record, Oct. 19, 1918
Morganton, Oct. 19—The influenza has not abated in Burke and
seems to be just reaching its height. There have been about 15 deaths and in
many cases whole families are helpless.
The physicians frankly acknowledge they can’t begin to reach
all the cases nor give the necessary attention.
Day and night without rest and eating on the road the
physicians traveled continuously almost and have now reached an agreement by
which they sleep six hours and work 18.
Due to Dr. Long having joined the army and Dr. Goode having
been called to assist Dr. Long at Statesville, Burke county is short of physicians
and while many will actually die for lack of assistance the physicians have gone
the limit of human endurance.
