Elizabeth City Hospital Will Be Convalescent Home for Naval Officers, 1918

“Brother of Dr. Saliba of this City Turns His Hospital Over to Government,” from The Daily Times, Wilson, N.C., Oct. 16, 1918

Washington, Oct. 16—The Surgeon General of the Navy Department yesterday designated the hospital at Elizabeth City as a convalescent home for naval officers. A contract has been signed with Dr. John Saliba, owner of Elizabeth City hospital, specifying that a minimum number of 50 officers of the navy will be constantly stationed at the county seat of Pasquotank. The hospital, not in operation at this time, will be ready for the reception of convalescent officers of the navy by November 1. The institution will be operated by its owner. Doctor Saliba was in Washington yesterday completing the negotiations with the Surgeon General of the navy. The building will serve its purpose as a war-time institution, and thus North Carolina adds another activity to its manifold interests contributory to winning the war.
