Surry Man Now General, 1918
“Rise of a Surry Man,” from the editorial page of The Mount Airy
News, Oct. 17, 1918. Henry Wolfe Butner was born in Pinnacle to Francis
Augustine and Sarah Wolfe Butner. He was a West Point graduate.
Captain W.H. Butner of Surry county was in the service of
the country at the beginning of this war with the rank of Captain. Later he was
advanced to the rank of Colonel and now he has been give the place of Brigadier
General. For some time he has been commanding a brigade in the first army
commanded by General Liggitt. General Butner is now and has been for some time
engaged in the thick of the fighting that is going on in France.
