With 5,000 Cases, Rocky Mount Starts New Rules About Flu, 1918

“Rocky Mt. Keeps Those With Flu In Their Homes,” from The Daily Times, Wilson, N.C., Oct. 12, 1918

Rocky Mount, Oct. 12--With seven deaths reported during the past 24 hours, bringing the total up to 23, the epidemic of Spanish influenza in the city continues to become more alarming. New cases continue to be reported.

The city board of health has enacted another stringent order designed to prevent the spread of the disease. No persons are to be permitted to leave their premises if they have the disease, and those who have had influenza can not leave their homes until six days after the accompanying fever has disappeared. No persons will be permitted to enter the homes or premises of persons sick with the disease unless the visitors are on missions to render aid. Violations of this order will be punished by a fine of $50.

It is estimated there are 5,000 cases in the city and the Methodist church and the west end school ae being utilized for hospitals and the ladies of the Red Cross are doing splendid service.
