124 Sign Up for Edgecombe County's Chamber of Commerce, Oct. 18, 1919

From The Daily Times, Wilson, N.C., Oct. 18, 1919

Chamber of Commerce for Tarboro

One of the most important events that has ever occurred in Tarboro and Edgecombe county took place Friday evening when around 200 representative citizens met at Clark’s warehouse at a get to gether (was spelled as three separate words) dinner for the purpose of organizing a permanent Chamber of Commerce to embrace the entire county.

Dr. D.W. Daniel of Clemson College, S.C., was the principal speaker and held his audience in rapt attention for one hour, which seemed much shorter. The subject of his address was “Building a Community” and was one of the most inspiring ever listened to by an Edgecombe audience. He said four essentials were necessary to build a community. These are cheerfulness, co-operation, cash and character. Each was covered in a thorough and entertaining manner, which has made Dr. Daniel on of the foremost after dinner speakers of the county.

Milton S. Brown, head of the Coca Cola Co., of Tarboro, was elected president of the organization by acclamation. Other officers and directors will be selected two weeks later at the next meeting.

Much interest and enthusiasm were shown and plans are being made to put the organization into immediate operation. This was considered one of the most important steps ever taken by Edgecombe citizens and one which will bring rural and town people closer together. Eleven of the 14 townships of the county were represented, showing the interest manifested in the movement. The entire county will be canvassed for members; 124 members signed up yesterday and 400 are expected shortly.
