National Auto Theft
Law Is Passed
The national automobile theft law, which has been advocated
for some time by the people of North Carolina, was recently passed by the
Senate.
There is scarcely a town in the state whee automobile
thieves have not been doing their stealing. The stealing had become a very crooked
business, and cars form North Carolina have been carried to other states and
sol, and there seems to be a syndicate of the thieves.
The bill approved by the Senate provides “That whoever shall
transport or cause to be transported on interstate and foreign commerce a motor
vehicle, knowing the same to have been stolen, shall be punished by a fine of
not more than $5,000 or by imprisonment of not more than five years, or both.
“That whoever shall, with intent to deprive the owner of the
possession thereof, receive, store, conceal, barter, sell, or dispose of any
motor vehicle moving as, or which is a part of, or which constitutes interstate
or foreign commerce, knowing the same to have been stolen, shall be punished by
a fine of not to exceed $5,000, or by imprisonment of not more than five years,
or both.”
