Shall We Bring Back Step-Singing at Guilford College? Oct. 8, 1919

From The Guilfordian, Guilford College, Greensboro, N.C., Oct. 8, 1919

Step-Singing as a College Activity

Last Wednesday evening while the shades of evening were gathering, the inmates of New Garden Hall assembled on the steps of said building. The purpose of the gathering was to promote an interest in community singing. As should happen in all such cases, our beloved college son “Hail Dean Old Guilford” headed the list of songs sung. This was followed by numerous rounds, old plantation songs, folk songs, and the like. Not only was an interest in step singing manifested, but loyalty to the college was augmented.

The time past, much stress was laid on the value of step-singing. This old custom is one that should e renewed and frequently practiced. Not only does this custom promote loyalty to our college by the singing of college songs, but the students learn better how to blend their voices in harmony. It is the writer’s hope that these few words may bring forth results in the form of more otherwise idly-spent evenings being devoted to this cause.
