Hospital Campaign Monday; $15,000 Is Goal. . . Whirlwind Campaign To Complete Ellen Fitzgerald Hospital

The directors of the Ellen Fitzgerald hospital, in session of the Chamber of Commerce rooms yesterday, decided to put on the campaign next Monday, Oct. 13, to raise enough funds to complete the building; operations on which have apparently ceased for lack of money. $15,000 is the goal.

Six teams were appointed as steering committees. They are composed of the following:

No. 1—J.B. Simpson, captain; J.C. Sikes, W.C. Sanders, Mrs. W.A. Henderson, Mrs. J.D. Warren.

No. 2—J.W. Laney, captain; C.C. Sikes, J.A. Stewart, and J.D. McRae.

No. 3—D.B. Snyder, captain; F.G. Henderson, W.A. Henderson, E.C. Carpenter, and Mrs. D.B. Snyder.

No. 4—T.P. Dillon, captain; T.C. Lee, J.J. Parker, C.M. Redfearn, and R.G. Laney.

No. 5—Chas. Iceman, captain; Dr. J.M. Belk, W.H. Norwood, and W.J. Rudge.

No. 6—R.A. Morrow, captain; W.J. Hudson, F.M. Morgan, and George McClellan.

The campaign will be conducted along the same lines as the first drive several years ago, which resulted in subscriptions to the amount of $10,000. All of this money has been spent, and $15,000 will be necessary to complete the hospital.

The Ellen Fitzgerald Hospital, originally an 18-bed facility, is now Carolinas Medical Center-Union. From https://atriumhealth.org/documents/Evergreen_Inserts/union-insert.pdf:

In 1918, Ellen Fitzgerald Hospital, an 18-bed facility, first opened to serve the residents of Union County, North Carolina. It was operated by Alto Freed Mahoney, MD, a young surgeon who took great pride in never turning away any individual who needed medical attention. In 1953, after several decades of significant growth, Union Memorial Hospital opened on the Ellen Fitzgerald site. Union Memorial joined Carolinas HealthCare System in 1995, a milestone that led to numerous renovations and upgrades; and, in 2005, the hospital changed its name to Carolinas Medical Center-Union
