Thieves Choose Church Over Chain Gang, Aug. 5, 1921

Five Sentenced to Attend Church Go On County Roads

Washington, N.C., Aug. 2—Five young men of this city, all in their teens, are under sentence to attend church regularly for a year. This is the alternative to serving one year on the roads. The five were convicted of stealing auto supplies. It was shown at the trial that the owners of the goods had been reimbursed in the sum of $50. Judge Lloyd Horton gave the defendants their choice of roads or church. The immediately accepted the latter.
