A new candidate for the office of sheriff of Mecklenburg county entered the field Saturday when Alva C. Epting announced that he would be in the race. Mr. Epting is an automobile salesman and has resided in Charlotte several years. He is a native of South Carolina. He lives on Parkwood avenue at North Charlotte.
The only other avowed candidates for sheriff are W.O. Cochran, who is serving his first term in office, and Charlie W. Russell, former Charlotte policeman and United States deputy marshal.
The final date within which candidates may field their formal notices as candidates for county officers is May 20.
