JOE TOM DANIELS
This neighborly, energetic fisherman of Wanchese is in the race for Sheriff of Dare county this time. He has two opponents for the nomination on the Democratic ticket right in his own precinct who will put up strong fights. These are Melvin Daniels and Bannister H. Davis. Nearly every precinct in Dare has a candidate out, not to speak of two Republican and one Independent candidates. Vernon Mann and Charlie Wilson Mann of Mann’s Harbor want to be sheriff. Harris Midgett of Kitty Hawk and Newcomb Midgett of Rodanthe want the job. David O’Neal of Nags Head is out they say. Ex-Sheriff Jeff Hayman of Manteo is back in the race. Lorenzo Farrow, the present sheriff, is running again on the Republican ticket, and he will have an least one opponent.
Benjamin F. Etheridge will run independent. Joe Tom will have a big campaign on his hands, and he could put up a strong fight but he is so modest about it and doesn’t want to offend the other Democrats and maybe have a hard fight if he gets the nomination.
There has been a wild scramble for the nomination of Sheriff of Dare ever since Edward S. Wise of Manteo announced himself sometime in March. Wise thought he wouldn’t have any opposition much and when he made his canvass, he found an opponent in every precinct. Many are wondering why so many want the Sheriff’s office in Dare county when it pays only about $1,100 a year. The office has proved highly remunerative to several Sheriffs in Dare, which holds the highest records for defaulting sheriffs of any county in the state perhaps; a few of them cleaning up small fortunes out of a levy that now totals only about $35,000 a year.
Joe Tom Daniels has always been an active church worker and an important factor in the life of his community. He stands high in his county and can usually be found at the head of any enterprise for community good. He gives no quarter to the lawless element and doesn’t make any promises he doesn’t expect to fulfill.
