The Knapp House--Joe Knapp and his wife Elizabeth Laing Knapp lived here for just two years until her death in June 1922. Knapp married his second wife, Margaret Rutledge, in 1923. She was 39 and he was 59. They lived together at the house for 28 years until Joe died in January of 1951 at the age of 86. His wife Margaret, who was then 68, sold the property. It changed hands several times, ending up with the federal government, established the Mackey Island Wildlife Refuge with the 7,000-plus acres. And what became of the house? It was sold for scrap for $57.52 and it was torn down.
