Don't Arrest My Husband for Whipping My Daughter; She Deserved It, May 3, 1923

Reports of Cruelty Unfounded. . . Wife of Man About Whom Damaging Reports Were Circulated Tells Officers Her Husband Has Done Nothing Wrong—She Says Whipping Was Justified and Not Too Severe

Sheriff R.E. Lewis and Deputy A.R. Pittman went Tuesday to the home of George Allen, Wishart township, to investigate reports which had been made here relative to a terrible whipping that Mr. Allen is said to have given his young daughter.

Mr. Allen was not at home at the time, but the officers were advised by his wife that the report was untrue, admitting, however, that her husband did whip their daughter and that he was justified in doing so because she had been keeping company with a young man whom they deemed undesirable, and to whom they objected.

When asked if she wanted Mr. Allen arrested and prosecuted, Mrs. Allen stated that she did not, because he had done nothing to warrant it.

It was first reported in Lumberton that Mr. Allen had beaten his daughter with a shotgun and that she was at the point of death, with many other fearful details. All of this was denied by Mrs. Allen, who said that her daughter had been at work in a store and had not lost any time on account of the whipping.
