News From King, N.C., May 9, 1923

Auto Wreck Occurs at King. . . Death of Aged Lady—School Entertainment Was Good—Marriage of Young Couples—Arrested on Liquor Charges

King, May 7—Mr. J.R. Cook, who holds a position with the Atlantic & Yadkin Rv. Co., spent Sunday with his family in Walnut Hills.

Mr. Henry Scott, aged 79 years, died at his home near Donnaha Sunday morning after a lingering illness. The interment was conducted from Mount Pleasant church today at 2 o’clock P.M.

Burwell Overby, Bark Love, Phillip Newsum and Barum Newsum were arrested here Saturday afternoon charged with violating the prohibition law. Bark Love was bound over to next term of court and gave bond and was released. Burwell Overby’s case was put off until next Tuesday. Barum Newsum and Phillip Newsum were released for lack of evidence. The cases were tried before Judge Jas. R. Caudle.

Mr. T.S. Petree of Winston-Salem was among the visitors here Sunday.

Mr. Mack G. Hamm of Winston-Salem and Miss Mabel Gunter of King were quietly married here Saturday.

Register of Deeds James R. Bowen of Danbury spent Sunday with friends here.

The King high school entertainment which has been on here since last Friday will close tonight. The exercises have been the best in the history of the school and the attendance has been good in spite of the inclement weather.

Mr. Stanley Newsum of Winston-Salem spent Sunday with relatives here.

We had a nice rain here today, which revived things wonderfully. The rain was also accompanied by a light hail.

Mr. Paul Fulton of Walnut Cove was here a short while on business today.

A Ford car driven by Mr. Burwell Overby of King crashed into a truck driven by Mr. R.M. Parker of Winston-Salem on west Main street here late Saturday afternoon. Considerable damage was done to both cars while all the occupants escaped unhurt.

Mr. Shober Kirby, aged 26 years of Donnaha, and Miss Miada Newsum, aged 16 of King, were united in the holy bonds of matrimony here today, Justice James R. Caudle officiating.
