Speed Cop Enforcing Law on Charlotte-Asheville Highway, July 10, 1923

Speed Cop Will Enforce Law at Forest City

Forest City Courier—The county commissioners and county board of education have jointly appointed Mr. Reuben Lee as full time speed cop to look after the law violators in the county. The appointment is a good one as there was very urgent need of a strict law enforcement regarding speeding on the public highways. Mr. Lee will also keep tab on automobile license tags.

He will especially work between Chimney Rock and Ellenboro, via Forest City and Rutherfordton on the Charlotte-Asheville highway. All fines and penalties will go into the school fund. Officer Lee has a motorcycle with a speedometer on it which shows the speed of any car. He has already caught several violators and will continue to do his best to enforce the law, regardless of who the violator is. He can arrest anywhere in the county. The speed law outside of corporate limits of town is 30 miles per hour.

Lee Making Good as Rutherford Speed Cop

Rutherford Sun—Speed officer Reube Lee is making good as a speed cop. He had worked 12 days up to Monday morning and had turned in $261 in fees and fines, which goes into the school fund. Officer Lee has not “pulled” anyone who was not driving very fast. He is fair, firm and on the job. The county did a wise thing when they put him on. One can tell a difference now when he motors out on our highways.
