Moonshiners Are Active and So Are Police, Oct. 15, 1923

Moonshiners Are Showing Fresh Activity in State

A special from Salisbury says: 157 illicit distilleries were captured, 17 automobiles confiscated, 954 gallons of liquor and 119,844 gallons of malt liquors were poured out by federal prohibition agents operating in North Carolina during September, according to the monthly report issued today by State Prohibition Director A.B. Coltrane.

A decided increase in the liquor-making business over the three summer months was indicated in the report, according to the director. This was probably due to the colder weather, he stated.

Forty-eight persons were arrested and 131 prosecutions recommended. No agents were injured or killed in the performance of their duties.

The value of the 17 automobiles seized was put at $4,260; total appraised value of property seized and destroyed, $42,232; total appraised value of property seized and not destroyed, $4,800.55; amount of proceeds of sale of seized property turned over to the collector, $1,545.95; amount of expenses incurred incident to seizure and sale, $291.92.
