Bryan Russell Admits to Shooting Willie Owenby, Claims Self-Defense, March 17, 1924

Bryan Russell Surrenders

Asheville, March 13—Bryan Russell, 25, surrendered to the sheriff at Hendersonville late yesterday, admitting that he had shot and killed Willie Owenby, 22 in the woods near Fletcher, after Russell and a friend had come upon Owenby and Mrs. Russell. Russell said he fired his shotgun at Owenby in self-defense, after the latter had reached for his pistol. Owenby and Mrs. Russell had been living together in the woods for two days, Russell told the sheriff.

Russell is being held in jail without bond.
