Clara Graves, young negro man, was arrested in Danville Thursday for the murder of Sam Holt, negro bricklayer from Reidsville, the killing taking place Sunday morning just after midnight at a big frolic in the home of Graves’ father, Wesley Graves, north of town. The sheriff of this county, C.D. Storey, and Deputy Ed Hensley went to Danville yesterday and brought Graves to Graham, where he is in jail awaiting trial without bond. There is no evident reason why the murder should have been committed, although Graves says he killed in self-defense. A search of the murdered negro revealed no pistol nor valuables. Clara left home soon after the shooting and his wife went in a day or so, and this gave the officers a clue and the arrest and confession followed.
