Jennie Lee Emerson Shot and Killed by Her Husband, March 10, 1924

Negro Woman Fatally Shot by Her Husband. . . Evidence at Coroner’s Inquest Shows Shooting was Accidental—No Eye-Witness to Shooting—No Details Given. . . Accident Version Doubted

Jennie Lee Emerson, colored, died Saturday morning in the Baker sanatorium here as the result of a pistol-shot wound inflicted by her husband, Roger Emerson, Friday morning about 9:30 at the home near Wakulla on a farm belonging to Mr. Pat McArthur.

An inquest was held yesterday by Coroner D.W. Biggs but the jury did not render a verdict. It was in evidence that the shooting was accidental and that there were no eye-witnesses to the shooting. If any statement was made by the woman just prior to her death it has not been made public. Some of the witnesses examined at the inquest testified that she had told them that the shooting was accidental but would not give any details.

Officials are somewhat doubtful that the shooting was accidental because of the fact that Emerson left as soon as he did the shooting and has not been seen or heard from since.
