Hail Size of Egg Damages Crops in Durham, June 14, 1924

Hail Storm Does Great Damage in Durham Yesterday. . . Hail Declared by Some of Oldest Residents to be Largest They Had Ever Seen

Durham, June 13—Hail of enormous size fell in this county during a severe rain storm today. Some of the hail stones were as large a hen eggs. Considerable damage was done to crops, while many roofs will have to be replaced because of the damage done to them by the storm. The hail was declared by some of the older residents of this section to have been the largest they have ever seen. The large stones fell in a scattered manner, but wherever they struck they left their mark. Tobacco was beaten to the ground and fruit trees were badly damaged, while automobiles in some instances, the tops of the cars were battered to ribbons, and the upholstering seriously damaged.

One resident in the path of the storm stated that every roof on his farm would have to be replaced.
