Crowd Expected for Rube Wilson Day, Aug. 20, 1924

Rube Wilson Day to Draw Greatest Throng of Year. . . Citizens of Cabarrus County to Pay a Suitable Tribute to Great Southpaw Hurler in Opening Clash with Augusta

Charlotte Observer, 20th

Whether Knoxville gets in or Columbia takes the franchise or whether or not they both get in and Macon sticks, is not the big issue here now. The Hornet management has suddenly awakened to the fact that the field here is going to be overrun Thursday when the crowds turn out to pay suitable tribute to Rube Wilson, the craft Hornet southpaw who is to hurl Thursday in the opening game against Augusta and who will be given a suitable tribute by the Concord and Cabarrus county people, from which county Wilson hails.

Preparations for seating the fans are going forward and it was announced last night that there will be seats for every one. All the chairs from Jaunty Jawn Elliott’s athletic club have been borrowed for the occasion and extra seats will be constructed cut of thick planks and scantlings on the famous “camp meeting” style. It is expected that all ground outside the playing field, and probably a large part in the playing field will be occupied by the fans.

It was announced several days ago that there would be a special train from Augusta, bearing the Tyger fans who will come to root for their ball club to deliver the goods in large hunks in the final series with the Hornets and to leave no doubt as to which town has the best ball club. Of course, today’s outcome will have a great bearing on the size of that train. If, by any chance, Augusta were to suffer a reverse against Asheville and the Hornets were to come through with a win, there is no doubt but that a long train will crawl into Charlotte sometime Thursday.

Concord and Cabarrus fans are coming in great numbers. There will be no organized pilgrimage, but the fans from there will come each according to the best route to the playing field. It was planned for all to come together, but this plan was abandoned when it was found that the crowd would be too large to be handle don’t the highway, and it was decided to let each crowd come by itself. Several centers in the county will be strongly represented. It is estimated that at least 750 people are coming from Concord alone.

Of course, while Cabarrus will have the largest representation, there is no doubt but that hundreds will come from other counties, and of course the Charlotte fans will pour out as one.

Tickets go on sale this morning at Kennedy’s and there will be none held out, it was announced. First come, first served is the motto.

The gates will open at 2 o’clock Thursday and fans who come from a distance may proceed to the park to watch the warming up process and pick good seats before the rush on the gate starts, sometime later.
