Joseph Hawkins Marries Miss Alice Newberry, and Ernest Messick Weds Miss Lucile Stephens, Aug. 14, 1922

Joseph L. Hawkins and Miss Alice V. Newberry, both of Berkley, were married here Monday at about 1 o’clock by Rev. E.F. Sawyer on Pearl Street. Witnessing the ceremony were Miss Alice Martell, Ernest E. Messick and Henry P. Wilson.

Ernest E. Messick and Miss Lucile T. Stephens, both of Norfolk, were married here Monday at 1 o’clock by Rev E.F. Sawyer on Pearl Street. The witnesses were Henry P. Wilson, Joe L. Hawkins and Miss Alice Martell.

From the front page of The Daily Advance, Elizabeth City, N.C., Aug. 14, 1922. this must have been a double wedding since both couples were married by Rev. Sawyer at the same time and had the same witnesses. But they were placed separately by the newspaper.
