Bank President and Cashier On Trial for Taking Deposits When They Knew Bank Was Broke, Sept. 16, 1922

Capital City Bankers on Trial in Raleigh

By Brock Barkley

Raleigh, Sept. 15—J.H. Hightower and H.H. Massey, president and cashier, respectfully [respectively?], of the defunct Central Bank and Trust company, were placed on trial in superior court today on a charge of receiving depots when they knew the bank was insolvent. The case consumed the whole day and a verdict is not expected until sometime tomorrow.

Hightower and Massey, with R.G. Allen, organizer of the bank, were arrested on a series of charges following the failure of the institution last January 13. Through compromise by which depositors are to be protected, Allen escaped trial. The two other officers, however, must face trial on an embezzlement charge after the present case had been ended.
