Klan Agent Released After Serving His Sentence, Oct. 7, 1923

Former Klan Agent Released from Jail

By the Associated Press

Lumberton, N.C., Oct. 6—Having completed a 90-day term in jail and taken the insolvent debtor’s oath, H.L. Talliaferro, former special Ku Klux Klan agent, was released from prison late today. He was convicted in July on charges of contempt of court in connection with his activities here prior to the trail of the noted case of Lawson, Brogden and Hedgepeth, who were acquitted of charges of flogging two women.

Talliaferro was charged with tampering with state witnesses and was sentenced by Judge Sinclair to serve 90 days in jail and pay (a) $750 fine. Appeal bond was fixed at $500 but he never gave bond or perfected his appeal.
