The textile tournament held at Schoolfield Saturday with teams representing the Young Men’s Christian Associations of six textile centers was a pronounced success even though it was something of an ordeal to the 16 teams who went through the arduous process of elimination for final honors.
Starting at 2 o’clock the athletes matched their skill up until supper time and after supper the finals and semi-finals were played off in the Schoolfield “Y”, the last of these being finished at 11 o’clock Saturday night.
The Schoolfield teams carried off two of the three available cps, capturing the basketball and the bowling trophies, White Oak won the volley ball contest, while Leaksville was presented a beautiful loving cup as runner-up for the basket-ball championship.
In the basketball contest Schoolfield defeated Spray 24 to 19; Draper defeated proximity 27 to 23; and Leaksville defeated White Oak in the closest game of any played with a score of 27 to 26.
The finals saw Schoolfield matched against Leaksville, the locals being given an opportunity for rest by the playing of the volley ball finals. The final basketball event was very fast and was featured by the Carolinians’ clever interference. “Rabbit” Harger’s goal shooting was exceptional, but Bain and Robertson, guards for the Leaksville team, also won laurels for their work. The score at the end of the first half was 13 to 8 in favor of Schoolfield and during the remaining half, Schoolfield kept ahead though the margin was uncomfortably close at times. The final tally was 33 to 26. the Leaksville team included Koontz, right forward; Reynolds, left forward; Chambers, center; Bain, right guard; and Robertson, left guard.
