Grainger Cunningham Formally Records HIs Oath to Quit Drinking, Dec. 9, 1924

Lenoir Man by Oath Would Stop Drinking

Kinston, Dec. 8—Grainger Cunningham’s oath has been formally recorded. It is unique in Lenoir county files. Cunningham came here with relatives a few days ago, and told Clerk Jesse T. Health of superior court that he wished to make affidavit to the effect that he would not take any intoxicating liquor for a period of 12 months. Heath said the procedure was unusual, but agreed to administer the oath when Cunningham insisted upon it.

Cunningham himself dictated the form the oath was solemnly subscribed to and witnessed. Then Cunningham asked the clerk to see to it that the incident got publicity. His friends, hearing of his resolve, would aid him in keeping it, he explained.
