“Singing Chief” Bennett, of the Durham fire department, is considerably more promiscuous with his mellifluous vocal offerings at present than during months past. All of which has perhaps no meaning to the general passerby in connection with putting out fires, but it is most probably a result of the progress being made on the new fire station on Mangum and Hollaway streets, now nearing completion.
The chief states that the No. 1 hook and ladder truck, several coat hangers, a checkerboard or two, and his crew of firemen will probably be installed in the new building some time during January.
Slate will begin to appear on the roof next week, and windows int heir frames, and the finishing touches will follow soon thereafter.
