Monroe, Aug. 6—The jury considering the case of A. B. Medlin, deputy sheriff of Cabarrus Conty, who is charged with the murder of Mark Simpson last March on Medlin’s farm, in the upper edge of the county, was ordered locked up for the night at 11 o’clock upon their report to the court that they had been unable to reach a verdict. The case was given to the jury at 10 o’clock in the morning.
Medlin has contended that he shot Simpson in self-defense. The prosecution has attempted to show that Medlin was of an excitable disposition and that he had been in previous difficulties. Medlin was placed on the stand in his own defense and related a straight-forward story.
