Everything here and at Fairmont is all set for the opening of the tobacco markets at the two places tomorrow morning, the day for the opening of all markets in the South Carolina belt.
A lighter sale is expected on the Lumberton market than that predicted by tobacco men the middle of last week. Tobacco in the fields ripened so fast the past few days until farmers were kept busy gathering it and had little time to prepare any of the weed for market. Local warehousemen now expect from 150,000 to 200,000 pounds on the opening day.
Sales on the Lumberton market begin in the morning at 9:30.
Editor’s Note: If you hear of a relative who grew weed in the 1920s, that meant he grew tobacco, not marijuana.
