W. C. Bracey, said to be a brick manufacturer, of Rowland, and Will Hunt, Indian, wee held under $1,000 bail Wednesday following a preliminary hearing before Justice Spivey at Freeman. They were arrested and charged with transporting liquor and assault with a deadly weapon on the person of Deputy Sheriff L. N. Hankinson, states a Bolton dispatch to the Raleigh News and Observer.
The men were arrested at Rowland and returned to Bolton for a hearing, but at their request trial was transferred to another justice court at Freeman.
The Hudson automobile which they were driving at the time of their first arrest was seized and later released under bond.
Deputy Hankinson charged that he arrested the two men on the highway near Lake Waccamaw Sunday afternoon, and leaving his motorcycle parked, started toward BBolton with his prisoners, Bracey being seated beside the driver and Hunt in the rear seat, the officer using the captured machine.
Near Lake Waccamaw, he alleged, Hunt suddenly seized him about the neck from behind, while Bracey stuck a pistol into his ribs.
The officer contends that they threw him from the moving machine and escaped.
Hankinson was painfully though not seriously bruised by landing on the pavement.
