Police Chief Threatened If He Doesn't Resign, Oct. 18, 1926

Rowland Chief of Police Holds Job In Spite of Threats. . . Gets Blackmail Letter Giving Him Until Last Friday Night to Give up Job, But He Hasn’t Quit Yet. . . Activities Against Liquor Industry Though Responsible for Threats Chief of Police R. C. Jones of Rowland is holding his job despite a threatening letter he received last week giving him until 6 o’clock Friday night to give up his job, with the warning that if he failed to do so, his body would be shipped home in a “wooden overcoat.”

The letter was dated and headed “North Carolina.” The postmark was not plain, and Mr. Jones was unable to make it out. He has sent it on to the post office department in Washington for closer scrutiny, however. It was typewritten in red letters on plain paper and bore these words: “We will give you until 6 o’clock Friday night to deliver your badge to town authorities. If you fail to do so, your body will be shipped home in a wooden overcoat.”

Mr. Jones has been very active against the liquor industry in Rowland, and he says he thinks this responsible for the letter he received.
