For the first time in its history, the North Carolina State prison is to issue a prison newspaper, the title of which will be The State Prison News, it was announced Tuesday by George Ross Pou, superintendent of the State’s prison. The first issue is expected to come off the press within the next 10 days. It will be printed once a month for general distribution in the State.
Printing presses were installed at the State’s Prison about three weeks ago, and Mr. Pou explained that the prison paper, which is to be edited and written exclusively by inmates of the prison, would be printed on the presses in the prison.
Tentative plans for the publication of the paper, he added, call for a four-page paper, patterned after other state department publications, for instance the publication of the State Board of Charities and Public Welfare, whose publication is entitled: Public Welfare Progress. It will be distributed to prisoners and to all others in the State who desire the paper.
No advertising will be accepted for the paper, Mr. Pou explained, adding that the paper will carry only news of the activities of the prisoners in camps scattered over the State. Items of interest to the prisoners will feature the publication.
