“We expect to start the actual manufacture of overalls in our new factory by the first of January,” said Mr. Nassef, proprietor of New Bern’s newest manufacturing enterprise, this morning. “The building is almost completed and the plasterers are now working on the inside. They will be through with their job this week.”
Mr. Nassef also started that the machinery for the new plant had arrived and would be installed next week.
When asked concerning the number of persons employed in the factory, the proprietor stated that about 75 would be given work.
“We will pay them a dollar a day while they are learning the trade,” he continued, “and after they have mastered the intricacies of the work, they will be in a position to earn from $4 to $6 per day, depending upon their skill.”
“What will be the capacity of your plant?” he was asked.
“We will be in a position to turn out 100 dozen pairs of overalls a day,” he replied. “At least, our machinery will permit us to manufacture that many. At first, of course, we won’t reach anywhere near that quantity, for we will have mostly ‘green’ help and production will necessarily be slow.”
Frank Miller of Baltimore, who has had 20 years experience in the manufacturing of overalls, has been employed as superintendent of the manufacturing plant. He will arrive here in a very short time to superintend the installation of machinery and to attend to other details.
