Following an illness of several weeks, William R. Marsh, known as “Uncle Billy,” highly esteemed High Point citizen, died Monday morning at 8:45 at his home, No. 318 West Broad street.
Mr. Marsh was 86 years of age. He was born in Randolph County on June 15, 1835, and had spent practically his entire life in this section of the state. He was a Confederate veteran, serving four years in the war between the states as a member of Company I, 22nd regiment. He was a loyal member of the High Point camp of Confederate veterans and until this year was a regular attendant at the annual reunions of the old soldiers.
Mr. Marsh is survived by three sons, John W. Marsh of this city; W.R.C. March of Thomasville; and D.W. Marsh of Salisbury. He also leaves two daughters, Mrs. Ellen Myers of Thomasville and Mrs. S.G. Yow of this city; and a sister, Mrs. Tamer Coltraine of High Point.
The funeral was held at Hopewell Methodist Episcopal church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J.E. Woosley; Rev. W.A. Lambeth of this city; and Rev. R.G. Tuttle of Thomasville. Members of the Masonic lodge at Thomasville, a fraternity with which Mr. Marsh was affiliated, had charge of the services at the grave.
