Saturday night, September 29, the Lucalian Literary Society held its annual initiation service. Twenty-five new members, the largest number taken into the society in years, were initiated, making a total of 42 members.
After the initiation the doors were opened to the invited guests who included the entire faculty, Mesdames Robert Britton and Clark and Misses Myrtle Holt and Bettie Cooper of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.
The following program was given during the evening:
Piano Solo—Miss Emily Sessoms
Reading—Miss Thelma Peterson
Violin Solo—Miss Matilda Weaver
Vocal Solo—Miss Janice Ballentine
After this, chicken salad in tomatoes, sandwiches and fruit ice was served. On each plate was a tiny green or white candle burning in a rosebud holder, representing the Lucalian motto: “We make light to shine.”
