Local News Briefs in Robesonian, Oct. 6, 1924

Items of Local News

--License has been issued for the marriage of Miss Dela Delema Gibson and Mr. James M. McMillan.

--Local Jewish stores will be closed all day Wednesday on account of the holiday—Yom Kippur, Day of Atonement.

--The board of county commissioners, road board and board of education are holding their regular monthly meetings in the court house here today.

--The American Legion auxiliary will holds its regular meeting Tuesday night at 8 o’clock at the home of Mrs. Fred H. Townsend, Chestnut and Sixth streets.

--The board of Stewards of Chestnut Street Methodist church will holds its regular monthly meeting immediately after prayer-meeting Wednesday night instead of tonight, which is the usual time.

--Mr. D.S. Nye, formerly connected with the People’s drug store in Marion, S.C., has accepted a position with the North State drug store as pharmacist. He is no stranger to Robesonians, being a son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nye of Orrum. He began work today.

--Mr. Robert Proctor, law student at Chapel Hill, spent the week-end here with is mother, Mrs. E.K. Proctor, Sixth street. Mr. Proctor is president of the first-year law class at the university. Miss Carrie Edmund of Lumberton is vice-president of the Senior law class at the university.

--Not only do beautiful lawns, which make beautiful towns, attract the eye of millionaire investors, but horses too. In this horseless age it seemed strange Friday to see a beautiful horse grazing on the lawn next to the home of Mrs. Geo. B. McLeod on Elm street. It was a loose horse, however, and was soon taken away from his Bermuda diet.

--Mr. A.J. Floyd of Fairmont, who was a Lumberton visitor Saturday, stated that the road between Lumberton and Fairmont was in good condition, with the exception of rough places just south of Lumberton. The water did some damage, but the work done by the highway forces before the heavy rains made it possible for the road to be put in good condition as soon as drags could be used.

--A land sale conducted Friday by the Carolina Land Co. of Hickory for Mr. J.H. Floyd was stopped after six of the lots adjacent to the McMillan sub-division in the western part of town had been sold. Mr. H.E. Fritts, secretary and treasurer of the auction company, stated that every lot offered was sold, but that their client did not think he was getting a fair price and called the sale off. The six lots sold for the sum of $2,111. Thursday the company will sell the Tolar property on the eastern edge of town.
