Fire Destroys 150 Bales of Cotton at Washington Warehouse, Oct. 26, 1924

Washington Fire Not As Serious As Was Reported. . . Report Current Here Yesterday at Beaufort Town Was Scene Disastrous Fire

A report that gained rather general circulation on the streets yesterday afternoon to the effect that Washington, N.C., was the scene of a disastrous fire was found last night to have been “somewhat exaggerated.”

Fire Chief McClure, of the Washington department, told The New Bernian that fire had broken out there at 6:30 yesterday morning in the cotton storage warehouse owned by the Havens Oil company, but that the flames were under control in an hour, and that their sweep was confined to the brick warehouse.

The blaze was said to have originated in a blower in the cotton gin of the Havens company. It spread quickly in the warehouse, destroying almost totally 150 bales of staple before it was extinguished.

Chief McClure said it had been impossible to determine losses that will be sustained by the Havens company.
