Henderson, N.C., Oct. 20—The group of students of the local high school who today went “on strike” as a result of alleged grievances against W.S. Nicholson, principal, tonight had petitioned for reinstatement according to a statement made by the principal. He said that their request had not been granted.
About 30 students left their classes at 11 o’clock this morning. They complained of the methods of discipline practiced by the principal.
Mr. Nicholson said tonight that he had in his possession a letter presented to him by a committee of the “strikers.” They expressed regret for their act, he said, and while claiming wrongs had been done some of the students, admitted that they should have gone about obtaining redress in some other manner.
There have been rumors for several days of dissatisfaction among the students, it was said. School authorities insisted on standing by the principal until an investigation could be had and a meeting of the school board for the purpose has been called for tomorrow evening, at which a hearing will be held.
A group of boys last night appeared in front of the high school building, and it was said, strung up an image purporting to be hanging the principal in effigy. The principal and another teacher had gone to the school building and called the chief of police, J.C. Champion. The names of a number of boys were obtained and they were cited into mayor’s court but the hearing was postponed today at the request of the school authorities. These boys, it was stated, were suspended from school.
The students who walked out were both boys and girls.
