Charged with the crime of having set fire to his own property in order to cash in on insurance premiums aggregating $6,000 to $8,000, P. L. Rea, prominent citizen of Edenton, is to be tried at the October term of Washington County Court, which convenes in the 25th, Judge Grady presiding.
The property in question, which was burned down several weeks ago, and for which Mr. Rae was tried in Recorder’s court, when he was allowed bail in the sum of $10,000, was a pleasure resort located in Albemarle Sound, near Mackeys, Washington County. It is reported that it represented an investment of $14,000.
While little evidence is reported as having been brought to light on the case, there are rumors to the effect that he paid a man $100 to set fire to the property, but the fire went out before much damage was done, and Mr. Rea himself then reset the fire himself.
